The root of this family tree - Richard Engwell, was an agricultural worker from Essex, born in 1795. Phonetic variations of the surname proliferated because early family members were unable to write their own name and separate but related trees have arisen for Engwells' Enguels' Enquels' etc.

The spelling Ingwell on which this tree is based derives from c.1869 when Richard Ingwell travelled from Essex to London and married Ann Harris.

Their second child Samuel Ingwell was a genuine cockney born within the sound of Bow bells. He married and moved to Yorkshire with his wife Rose and they raised six children.

Now over a thousand of our closest ancestors (including the back-history of marriage partners) are recorded in the Ingwell tree on the Ancestry website .
