In the 18th Century (before railways were built) the working classes did not travel much - they were born, brought up, lived, married and died in one area (and sometimes in a single Parish). Horses, foot-slogging and sometimes boat travel (as used by migrants from Ireland) were the principal means of transport.

If we know where our ancestors lived prior to (say) the 1850's then it is likely that earlier generations came from the same place.

The Ingwell and Kitson families were joined by the marriage in 1969 of Stuart and Bridget. The maps on either side show the original locations of their ancestrors in the mid-1800's. These ancestors lived through times of famine (in Ireland), epidemics (the cholera epidemic in London) and wars (the Boer war and more recently the two World Wars). Their biographies (available on this website) make a fascinating record of the social and political history of their life and times.
The Ingwell family tree comprises about 750 persons dating back to the 17th Century and includes those merged with it by marriage prior to 1969.
The Kitson/Martin family tree comprises about 350 persons dating from George Scott Kitson (born 1814).
